Hibachi at Home Cost: Real Totals for 12, 25 and 50 Guests

The price per person is only part of the bill. Here is every line that goes into a private hibachi chef’s total, with real numbers for 12, 25 and 50 guests.

Hibachi chefs cooking for guests seated along one long table at a backyard party

Most hibachi caterers advertise a price per person. That number is real, but it isn’t what you’ll pay: gratuity, sales tax, travel and the event minimum all land on the final bill. This guide walks through each line using our own prices at Hibachi Catering, then shows complete totals for three party sizes so you can budget with confidence.

Every number below follows the same rules our booking system uses. If you’d rather skip the math, get an instant quote with your date, guest count and ZIP code.

The short answer

On our Basic Hibachi Experience (the chef, the grill and the show, at your tables), hibachi at home costs $70 per adult and $40 per child (ages 4–12). Kids 3 and under eat free, and there’s a $700 minimum per event. Once gratuity and sales tax are added, a backyard party for 25 adults comes to about $91 per guest, before travel.

What the price per person includes

There are three ways to book, and each one includes a different amount of setup:

Package Price What’s included Best for
Basic Hibachi Experience $70 per adult, $40 per child Chef, grill, propane, two proteins per guest, hibachi vegetables, rice, sauces and the live show Birthdays and family parties where you already have tables and chairs
Hibachi Table Experience Entrées from $79 per guest Everything in Basic plus tables, chairs, linens, plates and utensils; each guest orders an entrée Dinners where you want the full restaurant-style setup
Hibachi Buffet From $40.90 per guest Freshly cooked hibachi entrées, sides and sauces with disposable plates and utensils Company events and parties of 50 guests or more

With Basic, each guest picks two proteins from NY Strip Steak, Chicken, Shrimp, Scallops, Salmon and Tofu, and you provide the tables, chairs, plates and utensils. With the Table Experience, guests order individual entrées from the full menu, from Hibachi Vegetarian up to filet mignon and lobster, so the price per guest depends on what they choose. The buffet packages come in three tiers for groups of 50 to 1,000.

The fees on top, line by line

These are the only charges added to the food, and our pricing page lists them too:

  • Gratuity: 18%. Added to the menu total on every package when you have 20 or more guests. Smaller parties don’t pay it automatically; tipping your chef is up to you.
  • Buffet service fee: 10%. Buffet bookings only, on top of the gratuity.
  • Travel: $3 per mile, one way, from our base in Murrieta. The travel fee calculator shows your exact amount.
  • Sales tax: 10.25%, on the food, gratuity, service fee and travel.
  • Deposit: 35% of the total to lock in your date. It’s part of the total, not an extra charge.
  • Card payments: 3% processing fee when you pay by credit or debit card.

How the event minimum works

The Basic package has a $700 minimum per event. At $70 per adult, 10 adults clear it. A smaller group, say 8 adults and 2 kids, makes up the difference with extra proteins or add-ons such as noodles, gyoza or edamame. The Table Experience and the buffet are priced per guest, so what matters there is the guest range: 8 to 500 guests for the Table Experience and 50 to 1,000 for the buffet.

Worked examples: 12, 25 and 50 guests

Here are complete totals before travel, calculated exactly the way our booking system does it. The first three columns are the Basic Hibachi Experience with adults only; the last one is the Hibachi Classic Buffet.

12 adults, Basic 25 adults, Basic 50 adults, Basic 50 guests, Classic Buffet
Food $840.00 $1,750.00 $3,500.00 $2,045.00
Gratuity (18%) $0.00 $315.00 $630.00 $368.10
Buffet service fee (10%) — — — $204.50
Sales tax (10.25%) $86.10 $211.66 $423.33 $268.30
Total before travel $926.10 $2,276.66 $4,553.33 $2,885.90
Per guest, all in $77.18 $91.07 $91.07 $57.72
Deposit to book (35%) $324.14 $796.83 $1,593.66 $1,010.07

The system rounds each line to the cent, so a total can differ by a cent from the sum of the rounded lines. A few things stand out:

  • The step at 20 guests. The 12-guest party pays no gratuity, so its cost per guest is lower. From 20 guests on, the 18% gratuity applies to the whole menu total.
  • The cost per guest then stays flat. Once gratuity applies, the all-in cost per adult on Basic is the same whether you invite 25 people or 50.
  • The buffet is the budget option for big groups. At 50 guests the Classic Buffet costs less per guest than Basic, even with the service fee. The trade-off is that guests serve themselves from chafing dishes instead of eating around the grill.

Adding travel

Travel is the one line that depends on your address. Take the 25-adult party above and put it 30 miles from Murrieta: travel adds $90.00, tax applies to it, and the total becomes $2,375.89. Closer to our base the fee is smaller; for events in Los Angeles, San Diego or Santa Barbara it’s larger. The travel fee calculator gives you the figure for your ZIP code, and our service areas list every city we cover.

What changes the price

  • Guest count and ages. Children 4–12 are $40 on Basic, toddlers eat free, and gratuity starts at 20 guests.
  • The package. Basic is the leanest. The Table Experience adds the full setup and individual entrées. The buffet scales best past 50 guests.
  • What people order. On the Table Experience, a filet mignon and lobster plate costs more than chicken and shrimp. Every entrée and price is on the menu.
  • Add-ons and extras. Starters, a fried rice upgrade, drinks, glassware, an extra server or chef, a patio heater (a Table Experience add-on; with Basic or the Buffet, bring your own) or a fire show all add to the food total. Our guide on how much food to order covers which ones are worth it.
  • Distance. Travel is charged per mile, one way.
  • How you pay. Paying by card adds the 3% processing fee.

Frequently asked questions

Is gratuity included in the price per person?

No. The price per person covers the food. For events with 20 or more guests, a 18% gratuity is added to the menu total on every package. Below 20 guests it isn’t added automatically.

Is hibachi at home more expensive than a restaurant?

Per plate, usually yes. Once you add the restaurant tip, tax, drinks and everyone’s drive, the gap narrows, and at home you get a private chef, your own space and your own schedule. We compare both honestly in hibachi at home vs. a restaurant.

Do kids pay full price?

No. On the Basic package, children 4–12 are $40 and kids 3 and under eat free. On the Table Experience there are kids’ meals on the menu.

How much is the deposit, and when is the rest due?

The deposit is 35% of the total and confirms your date. The balance is due the day before your event. Our FAQ explains cancellations and rescheduling.
